Yeah most guys wouldn’t admit this about themselves. But, I have no shame! When I see a 1st Generation Pontiac GTO – I go weak in the knees. That’s right! I go weak in the knees because I know the thrill of driving a fab ride like the GTO Muscle Car of the Sixties! It was the most fun you could have standing up back then. And it went for around Four-Grand. A chunk of change back-in-the-day. But you should see what they go for now!

You Can’t Handle a Pontiac GTO Goat!

Most of you out there likely think you can drive. Some even think they can drive like Ken Block! Trust me! Nobody alive drives like Block! – But! – When I’m behind the wheel of a Tri-Power Goat I’m Ken Block for a day! – Haa! – I’ve got a Ken Block Video of him driving not a Pontiac GTO – No! – too precious! But he’s driving the first four-wheel drive Mustang I’ve ever seen!

Hey! What’s a Goat?

Who said that? – Get up and Walk Away! – Okay! – You Can Stay! You’re not born knowing this stuff. And calling a Pontiac GTO a GOAT doesn’t seem natural at first. Rodders are sometimes goofy guys. Actually, you can take out the sometimes. We’re a strange and wonderful lot! At least that’s what the Internationally Recognized Opinionist Herself tells me.

Got Your GOAT!

Back to the GOAT! Essentially a guy named DeLorean who was in charge of some stuff at GM’s Pontiac Division got inspired. He flipped over Ferrari’s 250 GTO. GTO is an acronym – how do you like that word – Haa! – Anyway, it’s a shortening of the Italian – Gran Turismo Omologato. It means – Grand Tourer. Basically certified in racing circles to run in the grand turning class.

So, you take that GTO shorty and play with it some more. What you come up with is naturally enough – GTO becomes the nickname Goat! – Confused? – You bet! – I don’t get it either. I’m a bit embarrassed to call a Muscle Car like the GTO a Billy Goat. But, like I said, Rodders and Racers tend to be – – – what’s the word I’m searching for? – Different! – Yeah thas the ticket! – We’re Different!  ~;0)  Is the Sixties Pontiac GTO a Street Rod? But Wait! There’s More to the Pontiac GTO!

Yeah, there’s more to this tale including videos and stats. Hence this list of tid-bits about the first gen GTOs! Did you know many consider that the GTO set fire to the other automakers in the move to muscle cars by the Big Four? The Goat wasn’t the first muscle car. But it’s recognized as the one to beat in the industry! GTO’s 389 mill busted the rule at GM limiting engine size for the brand’s A-Line chassis! To compromise early production limits set at 5000 units.

What’s under the Goat’s Hood?

The 389 engines got revised cylinder heads with re-cored intake passages! It got a high rise intake manifold. And  power increased to 335 hp at 5,000 rpm for the base four-barrel engine. The Tri-Power engine rated at 360 hp at 5,200 rpm. While somewhat modest by today’s standards GTOs were Hot! Let’s face it! Even today 360 horses in nothing to sneeze at! As muscle cars go – GTO was and is a legend! – Don’t you wish you had one!
